Intel Mac (Macbook pro) crash problem

My new macbook (6 months young) had a total breakdown last week. It kept crashing over and over again, I couldn't even reinstall the OS. The machine returned from service today, they removed a corrupted ram-chip and didn't find anything else. My company has had this problem with 4-5 first-generation intel-macs so far this year. I'm reinstalling all software and trying to recap mails and project files... (One more crash now and I will consider returning to PCs.)

a ram chip error ! really ? that DOES sound like a hoax from apple. one would think they'd manage the transition to intel as os x is supposedly unix under the bonnet.

if I add upp everything I know about the mac, the generation prior to yours is the most reliable one. it looked like they were moving in the right direction, but apparently not. let's hope vista isn't going to do what intel has done for apple, with my dear pc's.

and by the way; at our design school, mac's are NOT welcome by teachers and the it-personel...

I have exactly the same problem, anyhow, I was able to reinstall the OS, after many, many, tries. I hope the problem stops here since I am beggining to re-install all my software.

I AM HAVING LOTS OF ISSUES WITH MY NEW MAC BOOK PRO FROM MOUSE FREEZING (WHERE IT WILL MOVE BUT NOT ACTUALLY DO ANYTHING OR CLICK ON ANYTHING) TO WORD AND SAFARI CRASHING - TODAY WORD CRASHED FOUR TIMES IN THE SPAN OF 6 HOURS.
ALSO, WHEN I START UP IT TURNS ON AND OFF SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE IT FINALLY STARTS UP.

ALSO, WHEN I FREEZE UP OR CRASH, I CANNOT DO ANYTHING SO I AM FORCED TO POWE ROFF, WHICH I HAVE DONE NO LESS THAT 50 TIMES SINCE I'VE HAS THE COMPUTER AND I KNOW THAT'S REALL YOT GOOD FOR IT.

ANY TIPS OR TROUBLESHOOTING WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

check the RAM? get some new ram for testing.

Word crashes here too, use Pages instead.
